Identifying Lubrication Points

*EASY*

You should lubricate steering and suspension components annually. Generally, newer cars have fewer lubrication points (grease fittings to be serviced). If suspension or steering linkage components have grease fittings, they will be found in pairs. Grease fittings are usually found at the upper and lower ball joints on both control arms and at the ball sockets of both tie rod ends for a total of six.

Some ball joints are factory sealed, contain no grease fittings or plugs, and therefore cannot be lubricated; the upper ball joints are good examples. Others might have threaded plugs that must be removed and replaced with grease fittings prior to lubrication. Grease fittings might also be found on the idler arm, parking brake cables or universal joints. Consult your owner's manual to determine the location of chassis lubrication points.
